How to Wear Double Denim (Without Looking Like a Throwback)

Denim on denim can look brilliant or accidental. Simple rules for contrast, fit and accessories that make double denim work.

Double denim, or the "Canadian tuxedo", has gone from fashion punchline to wardrobe staple. Done well it looks relaxed and confident. Done carelessly, it looks like you got dressed in the dark. A few simple rules make all the difference.

1. Contrast your washes

The safest approach is to pair clearly different shades: a light jacket with dark jeans, or the reverse. The contrast makes it look intentional.

2. …or match them exactly

The bolder option is a perfectly matched set in the same fabric, like a suit. It works best with dark or raw denim and a clean fit. What doesn't work is almost matching, which looks like a mistake.

3. Break it up

A white T-shirt, a striped top or a chunky knit between the two denim layers gives the eye somewhere to rest.

4. Mind the fit

Keep one piece more fitted than the other: a cropped, fitted jacket with wide-leg jeans, or an oversized jacket with slim jeans. See the fit guide for the shapes.

5. Choose your accessories

  • Leather: a brown belt and boots warm up blue denim.
  • White trainers keep it casual and modern.
  • Hems: a neat turn-up or a cropped length stops double denim feeling heavy. (Getting the length right is easier than you think: how to pin a hem.)

6. Try denim shirts too

A chambray or light denim shirt with dark jeans is a gentler entry point than a full jacket, and works in more settings.
