Your jeans look perfect from the outside, but your keys keep ending up down your leg. Worn-out pocket bags are one of the most annoying problems with jeans, and one of the easiest to fix.
Why pocket bags wear out first
The pocket bag is the cotton lining inside your front pockets. It's much lighter than denim, yet it carries keys, phones and coins, plus the friction of your hands going in and out all day. Sharp keys are the worst culprit. It's normal for pocket bags to fail years before the rest of the jeans.
DIY: a quick patch
For a single hole at the bottom, turn the pocket inside out, trim the frayed edges, and sew a strip of sturdy cotton across the bottom. It isn't pretty, but it works.
Professional repair
A neater fix is to cut away the worn section, sew on a new piece of durable cotton, and overlock the seam so it can't fray. That's how specialists handle it, as with this pocket bag repair from Repair My Denim.
Full replacement
If the fabric is thin all over, torn higher up, or pulling away from the denim, patching just moves the problem. The whole bag needs replacing with new cotton cut to the original shape. Sometimes the pocket rivets have to come off and the area is reinforced afterwards.
How to tell which you need
- One hole at the bottom, rest feels solid: repair.
- Several holes, or you can see through the fabric: replacement.
- Bag tearing away at the top edge: replacement.
Bonus: deeper pockets
Many women's jeans have pockets too shallow to hold a phone. While a pocket is open for repair anyway, it can be lengthened at the same time. It's worth asking.
